Just yesterday, as talks over taxes and spending grew a little louder in Washington, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) cited an "independent" report that found tax increases on the wealthy would "cost our economy more than 700,000 jobs."
The argument, not surprisingly, was debunked months ago. But the rhetoric raises a worthwhile question: what would happen if a bipartisan agreement fails to materialize, and tax increases automatically kick in on Jan. 1?
Yesterday, the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office reported the looming tax hikes and spending cuts would undermine the economy in 2013, but the "least harmful component of the coming fiscal consolidation is precisely what Democrats are demanding: the expiration of the Bush tax cuts for high earners."
Maybe Republicans will try to suppress this, too?

CBO doesn't examine the top bracket Bush tax cuts directly. But it does look at two competing scenarios: One where all of the expiring tax cuts except for the payroll tax cut are extended; another where all of the expiring tax cuts except for the payroll tax cut and the Bush tax cuts for top earners are extended.So, according to the CBO, the Democratic priorities do more to help the economy, and the Republican priorities do less. The 700,000 figure cited by the House Speaker has no basis in reality at all.
The former, CBO says, would increase employment by 1.8 million full time equivalent employees in 2013 relative to allowing everything to lapse. The latter would increase employment by 1.6 million. The difference, 200,000 full time equivalent jobs, is attributable to the expiration of the top bracket Bush tax cuts alone.
By comparison, other layers of the fiscal cliff save less money and have far greater economic consequences. Failing to extend the expiring payroll tax cut and expiring emergency unemployment benefits through 2014 would cost the economy about 800,000 jobs, according to CBO. The two halves of the sequester -- the defense cuts and the domestic cuts -- would each cost the economy about 400,000 full time equivalent jobs.
Maybe Republicans will try to suppress this, too?

- "Democrat party voted God out" ... I want to remind you about separation of religion and state. Political party by definition should be non-religious. It does not mean that members cannot be religious, but they practice religion in their private lives and not in public sphere.

It’s easy to laugh at Florida’s seemingly terminal inability to conduct a smooth election. But make no mistake: The delays, and the battles over absentee and provisional ballots, do not occur by accident. President Obama, whose Justice Department was kept busy this year challenging a raft of new state laws making it more difficult to vote, knows it.
Florida has attributed the difficulties this year to a late surge of more than 50,000 absentee ballots. But critics say that Florida's new voting law also played a role.
That law, one of the toughest and most controversial in the nation, was one of many new voting restrictions put in place since 2010 by almost invariably Republican state legislatures. A federal judge blocked the Florida law's restrictions on voter registration in August, calling the new rules “harsh and impractical.”
Left in place was a provision cutting back the number of early voting days from 14 to eight, contributing to long waits -- as much as 6 or 7 hours in Miami Dade County and 3 to 4 hours elsewhere -- that Florida League of Women Voters President Deirdre Macnab called “unacceptable delays, worse than many third world countries.”
Voters in Florida also had to contend with the longest ballot in state history, a document that spans multiple pages. The new law also requires voters who move to a different county to obtain provisional ballots, which take longer to process.
The silver lining is that booming turnout has also contributed to lengthy lines. But Macnab noted that potential voters who had to work or care for their children were likely deterred by the long wait.
“Those people were really unfairly treated by these laws,” Macnab said.
That this election was decided without Florida is both a testament to the country’s shifting demographic map and a relief to anyone nervous about a disaster reminiscent of 2000. There is another parallel, though: The 2000 election was marred by revelations that a private firm tasked with removing ineligible felons from Florida’s voting rolls mistakenly disenfranchised legitimate voters.
Critics saw echoes of that in Florida Gov. Rick Scott’s push to purge ineligible noncitizens from the rolls. Sen. Ben Nelson, a Democrat, drew a comparison between the two in a letter to Scott and warned that “attempts to purge the voter roll so soon after signing one of the nation’s most controversial voting laws raises concern, especially among young and minority voters.”
County election supervisors balked when they received preliminary lists of ineligible voters that were riddled with errors. Legitimate voters identified as ineligible had become naturalized citizens, or were mistaken for someone else with a similar name. Florida suspended the purge until it got access to a federal database; ultimately, the number of names shrank from an ostensible 180,000 to around 200.

Go figure. I’ll always be proud of my country, but Obama’s victory defies political logic and economic reality.

It was a stunning personal triumph for a president who was ripe for a downfall.
Now comes the hard part. The presidency is a singular institution in our democracy, and Obama too often showed himself unable to bear its unique burdens in the last four years.
He set a partisan tone right out of the gate when, in a showdown over the stimulus, he rejected Republican ideas and declared, “I won.”

It was a moment of chest-thumping bravado that helped poison the well.

The facts of the state of our union, then, do not explain last night’s results. Nor is it sufficient or fair to say Mitt Romney lost an election he should have won.
Yes, Romney made mistakes, chiefly being too timid for too long. But he proved to be a perfectly fine candidate down the stretch, performed brilliantly in the first debate and surged into the lead in many national polls.

But he could never put together a clear path to 270 electoral votes, coming tantalizingly close but failing to make the final sale in too many swing states.

Obama wins a second term when gravity says he shouldn’t have. He campaigned from beginning to end with grit and more determination than message.
He and associated groups spent over $100 million in TV ads attacking Romney’s character and tenure at Bain Capital. But Obama did not win because he destroyed Romney or because a majority believes in his agenda. He won because enough voters still believe in him with a quasi religious fervor, making the actual content of many of his policies largely irrelevant to them.
- I think it is still better than Republicans supporting people who think that women have some magical way to stop becoming pregnant when rapped (see Tod Aikin), or that there is something like a "forceable rape" (see Paul Ryan). So maybe it is better to have faith in something than be ignorant facts and science. But ignorance may be a bliss so I do not blame people for it.
Strangely transfixed by his remote and haughty aura, they believe that, even without a real coherent economic plan, life will somehow get better for them if only they follow him.
- on the other hand, can you or anybody explain Romeny's economic plan? How his numbers added up? I understand that there are many scenarios, so let's discuss the best possibility that Romney though will be able to get?
For others, his “likability” edge made up for Romney’s advantage on the all-important economic issues. Life’s not fair, and the idea that likability trumps competence, in the Oval Office no less, strikes me as absurd, yet there it is in 21st century America.
- life is surely not fair, but in the same way Kerry lost to Bush in 2004: most people remember Kerry as flip-flopper without core who would not be strong enough to defend america. I think he was much superior candidae than Bush, true war Veteran and skilled politician. Well, you win some and you loose some. I think Bush in 2004 had a much bigger challenge with two wars and downward trend in the economy and yet he won.
- how do we know that Romney is competent? His campaign was worse than Obama's, especially he organization to get the votes, so in this respect in terms of managing large group of people, giving them direction, and motivating them, I think Obama was clearly more competent. And isn't it what we expect from the president?
Of course, Obama did have a message for those who feel left out of the American dream. He told them they had been cheated, that the nation was rigged against them and that he would soak the rich and redistribute their wealth. The first term proved he meant it, with a surge in disability benefits, food stamps, bailouts and class warfare, so we’re likely to get more of the same
- actually, increase in welfare benefits is cyclical and corresponds to recessions. It would have happened under any president. It is a valid question about the degree though.
It’s not a happy prospect or even a mandate, but we shall see if the president can work with the Republican House to change the nation’s course.
- so let's flip it - if Romney would win by a small margin, would that be a happy prospect and a mandate? These are the rules both candidates agreed upon, so now questioning them is quite pointless.
He rarely did in the first term, and that is a luxury he no longer enjoys. He now must be president instead of just running for the office.
The challenges are numerous and urgent. Our nation is treading water, at home and abroad. Decline is not inevitable, but neither is it a given that we will get our mojo back.
Despite his many talents, Obama showed no talent for uniting and moving the country forward in his first term. He gets another chance and, frankly, I would be surprised if he does much better this time.
Happily surprised, absolutely, but still surprised.
- I hope you know the saying: you need TWO to tango. So before blaming Obama, we need to ask if the other side was cooperative. Well, how many times House passed the same bill to repeal Obamacare? They knew it goes nowhere, they knew it will lead to nothing, and they never even condider compromise. I think it is exhibit one that House was so stuck that was steping on the toes of President Obama when they tried to dance political tango.

At 11:40 p.m., he was still at it — reciting county after county, "and then there are cats and dogs elsewhere that add up to another 120,000 votes." Kelly and Baier sought to provide a check but listened sagely to Rove, who is not just a chief political analyst for Fox and a columnist for its sibling newspaper, the Wall Street Journal, but also a leader of one of the major outside political committees spending tens of millions to defeat Obama and other Democrats.Of course, one of the big questions that will be answered in the coming months is what will become of Rove's outsized influence on GOP politics. Remember Rove is the man behind American Crossroads, the most influential and well-heeled super PAC on the Republican side. After his predictions didn't come true, will his big donors shy away from him? Or will he continue his decades of influence over the party?
"Having lost the argument — not to mention his call that predicted for Romney an edge over Obama in the electoral college of about 30 electoral college votes — Rove made clear that the president's victory carried little weight.
